the quiet afterglow a moment leaves behind.
Some things end long before they are finished with us.
Memories have edges. You can find where they begin, where they belong, even if the details have softened with time.
But perhaps not everything that remains is a memory.
They have no beginning you can find. No particular moment you can return to. They simply appear, sometimes, carrying the faintest sense of something once felt.
It is something smaller. A feeling that arrives without its story. A certain light in a room. A voice you haven't heard in years. The smell of rain on a road you haven't walked in a long time. Something passes through the present, carrying with it a piece of another time.
And then it is gone again.
Perhaps that is what remains when a moment has gone.
Not the moment.
Something quieter.
Something that has slipped free from its place in time and found its way into us.
We change, and so does everything around us. What once felt immediate becomes distant. What once seemed important becomes almost impossible to explain. And still, every now and then, something stirs.
A warmth.
A sadness.
A tenderness for something we can no longer quite remember.
Maybe that is why the past is never entirely behind us.
Somewhere between what happened and what remains, there is a kind of silence.
The Japanese call it 余韻. Yoin.
And perhaps it is not what we remember that stays with us.
Perhaps it is what we felt, after the moment had already passed.
Maybe that is what some moments leave behind.
Not themselves. Just enough of themselves to keep echoing.
Somewhere inside us, they are still happening.
Not gone.
Just no longer where we left them.
